Images from Milford Sound show that even in the midst of severe storms, Fiordland and nearby areas are spectacular. Milford Sound receives up to 10 meters (33 feet) of rain each year, making it and the other fiords among the wettest places on Earth. Despite the name 'Sound', they are fiords, formed by glacial action. To the east, Otago becomes much more dryer!
